BREAST CANCER AWARENESS: GIN &JACQIE “BAG PRINT DESIGN” CONTEST 2011
A joint effort by Malaysia Breast Cancer Organization and “gin&Jacqie”
May 19, 2011, Kuala Lumpur - For the many creative campaigns and activities to increase public awareness on breast health, this is definitely the first of its kind. Malaysia Breast Cancer Association will be joining efforts with gin &Jacqie, a home grown designer bag collection in creating awareness for one’s breast health by organizing a “Bag Print Design” contest.
“We’ve done numerous campaigns, and activities but we’re certainly excited to see the response for the “Bag Print Design” contest, with gin & Jacqie, which has a huge following with young people.
“Targeted at the young, the objective is to reach out to those aged between 17 – 24 years old to become more breast aware through “practical” educational workshops in the various colleges nationwide,” said Ms Ranjit Kaur, President of Malaysia Breast Cancer Association while speaking to the media.
Nothing beats “practical experience” as MBCA demonstrate breast self awareness using the silicone breast models, which enables one to touch, feel and navigate appropriately.
“By doing so, young girls can check for themselves on a regular basis. “Practical” experience can one day, save your life,” added Ranjit who is a breast cancer survivor herself.
Elaborating on the contest mechanics, Ms Jacqueline Ng, the founder of gin & Jacqie said that designs for the bag print must incorporate the signature pink ribbon with a creative touch.
“It is freeform of art, as long as the pink ribbon is included. We’re looking for a design which is able to take on the personal message of breast health or breast cancer, and communicate it powerfully to others."
“Participants also need to take note that the design is cost effective enough to be printed on a large quantity of bags, besides taking into consideration a maximum of eight colours used. Lastly, the design should be 100% original, with a creative name to spice it up,” quipped Ng.
The winning design will be printed on the Gin & Jacqie special edition bags, and will be launched for sale on 8th October 2011. Malaysia Breast Cancer Association will be the sole beneficiary of the net profit from the sales of the bag.
Hurry now, as:
Submissions are open from 15th May – 30th June 2011
Followed by online voting, from 1st July – 20th July, 2011
Winners will be announced: 31st July, 2011.

PUTRAJAYA INTERNATIONAL
DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL
Malaysia Breast Cancer Association (MBCA) is sending two teams of breast cancer
survivors to participate in the 1st Putrajaya International Dragon
Boat Festival from 5 to 7 June 2011. All paddlers are breast cancer survivors and they aim to
Paddle for Courage, Strength and Change - to create a change in the mindset of
the public that breast cancer is not a death sentence, but one can still live
an active life after breast cancer.
Due to the popularity of dragon boating among breast cancer
survivors particularly in alleviating lymphedema or swelling of the arm, which
can occur in some women as a side effect
of breast cancer treatment, this strenuous water sport is piquing the interests
of many. “It is not so much on winning itself. It’s more about getting other survivors to reach out for the same cause and to know
that we’re all striving for the same mission which is to re-educate the public
that there is life after cancer” said Wong Mee Yee, Team Captain of MBCA team who also played a part in roping in other dragon boat teams of
breast cancer survivors.
“This is the first time we are participating in the 2000m
marathon but we’re confident that with all the tough training we have had, we
will make it!. In fact, the marathon is the highlight of our
race as it is a male-dominated race. However, we will have two paddlers
who are non-survivors,” added Wong.
